Enhancing the quality of life
in Burlington and Southeast Iowa

As all who attended last week's concert already know, we honored our longest-tenured band member, clarinetist Sue Kristensen, for playing in the band for an amazing 75 years! To commemorate the event, the Burlington Municipal Band Foundation bought the band a new podium (the box upon which the conductor stands) that has a railing - a feature particularly appreciated by our more "mature" conductors. Affixed to the podium will be a plaque with an inscription that reads, "Presented in grateful recognition of SUE KRISTENSEN on her 75th year as a member of the Burlington Municipal Band." Congratulations, Sue, on this remarkable achievement!

will feature various conductors
If you will forgive a brief aside, readers may be interested to know that Dr. Edward Stone, the person for whom Janel's school is named, eminent American space scientist, Caltech Professor of Physics, retired Director of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and father of the Voyager space probes, played the French horn in the Burlington Municipal Band while he attended Burlington Jr. College (now Southeastern Community College). Perhaps it is inevitable that an organization such as ours that has been in existence for nearly a century should have accumulated some worthy alumni. Needless to say, we are proud of the many fine musicians who have been members of our band and who have achieved great success in diverse fields of endeavor since moving on. Dr. Edward Stone is certainly at the head of that list!
Janel Horn, band director at Burlington's Edward Stone Middle School will conduct the regular 7:30 PM concert. Janel plays the saxophone when not conducting and is a member of the Southeast Iowa Band and the Burlington Area Saxophone Quartet.
This week's concert will be our ninth of the season - after this, just one more concert to go in a summer that has seemingly flown by! This will be another "special" concert and will feature the Burlington Municipal Jazz Band, a big band assembled from members of the Burlington Municipal Band, performing at 6:15, prior to the regular 7:30 PM concert.
The jazz band, led by BHS band director Derrick Murphy, will perform five great "charts:" Bugle Call Rag by Jack Pettis, Billy Meyers and Elmer Schoebel arranged by Jeff Hest; Wave, by Antonio Carlos Jobim arranged by Philip Mossman, featuring Adam Creager as bari sax soloist; Tribute to the Duke, featuring the music of Duke Ellington arranged by Sammy Nestico including In a Sentimental Mood, Mood Indigo, and It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing; Crystal Silence by Chick Corea arranged by Mike Tomaro featuring keyboardist Richie Bliesner; and Brass Machine by Mark Taylor, an exciting trumpet section feature.
