Note from the webmaster: We update this web site at least once a week during our summer concert season. Since the program for each Sunday concert is finalized at our rehearsal on Monday evening, we generally post the week's update sometime on Tuesday. Unfortunately, if you are viewing this page on a summer Monday, what follows will undoubtedly be the information for YESTERDAY'S concert.
Other selections will include: American Folk Rhapsody by Clare Grundman including My Little Mohee (more commonly known as On Top of Old Smokey), Shantyman’s Life, Sourwood Mountain, and Sweet Betsy from Pike; A Nation’s Prayer by George W. Warren and William Steffe, arranged by James Ployhar; A Festival Prelude by Alfred Reed; American Flourish by Robert W. Smith; Joyce’s 71st N.Y. Regimental March by Thornton Boyer; Leroy Anderson, A Legacy in Sound arranged by Robert W. Smith including Syncopated Clock, Blue Tango, and Bugler’s Holiday; Jazzin’ It Up by Harry Richards, featuring the band’s saxophone section; Sinatra! arranged by Stephen Bulla including Come Fly With Me, Witchcraft, That’s Life, and Fly Me to the Moon; The Lion King arranged by John Higgins, a medley including Circle of Life, I Just Can’t Wait to Be King, Be Prepared, Hakuna Matata, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, and King of Pride Rock; and our traditional closing march, The Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa.
Retired New London band director (and trumpeter) Ron Coberley is this week’s conductor. He and the band will have a busy day this Sunday: besides conducting our regular 7:30 P.M. concert at the Crapo Park band shell, Ron will conduct the band in the same program at Keokuk’s Grand Theater at 3:00 that afternoon in a concert sponsored by the Keokuk Community Fine Arts Council. (Due to concerns about weather -- both heat and rain -- the concert has already been moved from the Rand Park Pavilion.) We greatly appreciate being invited to perform in Keokuk and we’re really looking forward to playing for a new audience and meeting new friends!
We’re confident that our audiences in both communities will enjoy this concert since Ron is “pulling out all the stops” to make this a memorable event. BHS band director Derrick Murphy, our band’s trumpet section leader will be our soloist playing Del Staigers’ Carnival of Venice subtitled “Valse Brillante.” For this piece, written in the great virtuoso tradition of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Derrick will play the cornet as did the great soloists of that era.
