May 22, 2016
Note from the webmaster:  We update this web site at least once a week during our summer concert season.  Since the program for each Sunday concert is finalized at our rehearsal on Monday evening, we generally post the week's update sometime on Tuesday.  Unfortunately, if you are viewing this page on a summer Monday, what follows will undoubtedly be the information for YESTERDAY'S concert.
For those specifically SEEKING web pages from past concerts, our recent concert archives are now available online.

After playing for the Memorial Day service,
our first Crapo Park concert of 2016 will be on June 5
Our special guests for this concert will be the Bel Canto Chorale.  The Chorale, Burlington’s premier vocal music ensemble, will join the band for the first time ever on three patriotic selections that we believe are certain to be crowd-pleasers! Two of them, America the Beautiful and The Battle Hymn of the Republic alternate years as the finale numbers of Iowa’s All-State Music Festival. The third is our traditional closer, The Stars and Stripes Forever, here featuring lyrics written by Sousa himself.  The remainder of Jim’s selections are representative of the sorts of music that you will hear at our regular Crapo Park concerts.  The selections are as follows:
America the Beautiful by Samuel Augustus Ward arranged by Carmen Dragon and featuring the Bel Canto Chorale; Our Director March by F.E. Bigelow; Flourish for Wind Band by Ralph Vaughn Williams; Themes Like Old Times III  arranged by Warren Barker including Ma (He’s Making Eyes At Me), My Melancholy Baby, Ain’t We Got Fun, Moonlight Bay, and After You’ve GonePrecious Lord, Take My Hand by Thomas A. Dorsey arranged by Robert W. Smith;  Recorded by Sinatra arranged by Warren Barker including High Hopes, Young at Heart, Love is a Tender Trap, Love and Marriage, and My Kind of Town; Under the Sea by Alan Menken/Jerry Nowak; Guys and Dolls Overture by Frank Loesser arranged by Philip J. Lang including To the Post, Three Cornered Tune, I’ve Never Been in Love Before, A Bushel and a Peck, and the Guys and Dolls Theme; On the Mall March by Edwin Franko Goldman;  Battle Hymn of the Republic with this setting by Peter J. Wilhousky, arranged for band by James Neilson featuring the Bel Canto Chorale; and our traditional closing march, The Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa, again featuring the Bel Canto Chorale.
Again this year our season will begin with a special “Season Kick-off Concert” at the Capitol Theater conducted by Jim Priebe.  Jim is a retired Burlington band director, and trombonist in the band when not conducting. Jim serves as President of the Burlington Municipal Band Foundation.
