Note from the webmaster: We update this web site at least once a week during our summer concert season. Since the program for each Sunday concert is finalized at our rehearsal on Monday evening, we generally post the week's update sometime on Tuesday. Unfortunately, if you are viewing this page on a summer Monday, what follows will undoubtedly be the information for YESTERDAY'S concert.
For those specifically SEEKING web pages from past concerts, our recent concert archives are now available online.
Enhancing the quality of life

Next week's concert will feature
various conductors
After a pause while the band regroups, the regular 7:30 PM concert, also conducted by Derrick Murphy, will begin. Derrick, we should mention, is, as previously mentioned, the band director at Burlington High School. He is our band's trumpet section leader and serves as the principal trumpet of the Southeast Iowa Symphony. He plays in the Bullis-Rutter Big Band and in numerous musical productions in Southeast Iowa and Western Illinois.
Derrick has titled his concert "A Soundtrack of our life: Music that defines a generation." His selections will include: Theme and Rock-out by John Cacavas; Songs of the Carpenters including Rainy Days and Mondays and We've Only Just Begun arranged by Robert W. Lowden; Chicago Medley including (I've Been) Searchin' So Long, Colour My World, and Does Anybody Really Know What Time it Is? arranged by Cesar Giovannini; I Don't Know How to Love Him arranged by John Cacavas; Flourish for Wind Band by Ralph Vaughn Williams conducted by Jeffrey Jackson; Medley (of Beatles tunes) by John Lennon and Paul McCartney including Michelle, Eleanor Rigby, and Yesterday; Glenn Miller in Concert arranged by Wayne Scott including At Last, Chattanooga Choo Choo, Moonlight Serenade, Pennsylvania 6-5000, and Little Brown Jug; Days of Wine and Roses arranged by John Krance; Barry Manilow in Concert arranged by Robert Lowden including It's a Miracle, Weekend in New England, This One's For You, and Could it be Magic; and our traditional closing march, The Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa.

Derrick has invited his former student Jeffrey Jackson (who also plays trumpet in the band) to conduct a selection on his concert. Jeffrey is a senior music student at Western Illinois University and we're delighted to welcome him to our podium!

Was it hot? Yes it was! But did you have fun? Yes! Even though the heat index was 118 degrees at concert time, the Nauvoo Performance Bagpipe Band (their name has officially changed from Nauvoo Pageant Bagpipe Band) arrived punctually and gave their usual enjoyable performance of traditional Scottish music and dance with skirls and flourishes galore! And, even though we were sitting on a concrete platform that had been in full sun all day long and was busily radiating all of its stored heat, the band members agreed that Laura Westfall had done a fine job on her first outing as conductor. And, Laura - after this it will definitely get easier!
This week the band will give Mother Nature a chance to redeem herself by offering another pre-concert performance, this time by the Muni Jazz Band led by BHS band director Derrick Murphy. The Jazz Band will begin playing at 6:15 and will play seven pieces (we jazzers call them "charts") by Neil Hefti. Derrick calls the jazz portion of our concert, "An Evening of Neal Hefti."
The selections will include: Cherry Point, Cute, Teddy the Toad, Sunday Morning, Flight of the Foo Birds, Li'l Darlin', and Whirly Bird.
