This Week's Concert -- Burlington Iowa Municipal Band

Since the program for each Sunday concert is finalized at our rehearsal on Monday evening, we generally post the week's update sometime on Tuesday. This week's concert will be conducted by a newcomer to our podium, Jay Hauenstein. While this will be Jay's first time conducting the band, he is no stranger. A lifelong resident of Columbus Junction, Jay has subbed in our trombone section occasionally for years and now that he's retired he's able to join us full time. Jay is a fine trombonist and plays in the Southeast Iowa Symphony and the Southeast Iowa Band. A versatile musician, Jay is an excellent vocalist and pianist, directs his church choir, sings in the Mt. Pleasant and Muscatine Chorales and plays piano for the Muscatine Mad Creek Mudcats! He taught music in Wapello, the Columbus Community Schools, and Muscatine Community College and, after teaching, had a second career as a driver for Burlington Trailways and later as a semi-trailer operator. During his years with Burlington Trailways he drove the band to the Iowa Municipal Band Festival in Boone and then played in the band - talk about versatility!

Jay has no particular "theme" for his concert beyond having chosen music that is beautiful, exciting and entertaining! His selections will include: Overture for Winds by Charles Carter; Somewhere Out There by James Horner arranged by John Edmondson; Selections from Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber arranged by Warren Barker including Think of Me, Angel of Music, All I Ask of You, and The Music of the Night; Shenandoah arranged by Robert Sheldon: Emblem of Unity March by J.J. Richards; The Wizard of Oz Fantasy by E.Y. Harburg arranged by Paul Yoder including We're Off to See the Wizard, If I Only Had a Brain, The Merry Old Land of Oz, Ding Dong the Witch is Dead, and Over the Rainbow; Trumpets Up by W.B Green; Hoagy Carmichael: An American Classic including Lazy River, Star Dust, Heart and Soul, and Georgia On My Mind; The Trombone King March by Karl King; Fanfare for the Common Man by Aaron Copland arranged by Robert Longfield; and our traditional closing march, The Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa.

How can it be the middle of July? We are now past the midpoint of our season with just four concerts to go. The summer is flying by much too quickly - we're savoring the long days and warm evenings and we hope that you are too!
